Frequently asked questions about The Mama We See Project

What is The Mama We See?

The Mama We See is a research project led by Edith Institute. We are interviewing Black mothers who have experienced complications during pregnancy or birth, such as high blood pressure, preeclampsia, eclampsia, or hemorrhage. The goal is to listen to your story so we can help improve maternal healthcare and ensure mothers receive the respect, safety, and care they deserve.

Who can participate in the study?

Black mothers who:

  • Experienced complications during pregnancy or childbirth (like high blood pressure, preeclampsia, eclampsia, or hemorrhage).

  • Are 18 years or older.

  • Are willing to share their story in a private interview.

  • Gave birth in the last five years

What will I have to do?

You’ll take part in a 2-hour one-on-one interview with a trained interviewer. The interviewer has experience in psychology and will take care to support the mental health of all study participants. The conversation is private and confidential. You’ll be asked about your experiences with pregnancy, birth, and healthcare. (should I say it is being audio recorded)

Will I be compensated?

Yes. As a thank you for your time and sharing your story, you will receive a $225 gift card.

Will childcare or transportation be provided?

While we will not have childcare staff onsite, we will work with you to schedule interview times that fit your childcare needs and help you arrange care including providing compensation to be used to secure childcare. If transportation is a concern, we will help coordinate options to support you.

Where will the interview take place?

Interviews can be scheduled at a time and place convenient for you, in a private in-person location at either Kettering Lab RM#56- University of Cincinnati (160 Panzeca Way, Cincinnati, OH 45220) or CoHatch (5325 Deerfield BLVD, Mason, OH 45040).

Who will know what I say?

Your privacy is our priority. All interviews are confidential. Only the interviewer will be present, and your identity will not be shared in any public materials.

Why should I participate?

Your story can help improve maternal healthcare for other Black mothers and mothers who suffer from complications during pregnancy. By sharing your voice, you are helping to shape training for doctors, nurses, and healthcare providers, so future mothers receive safer care.
